The following are examples of
personal injury cases handled by the Minnesota lawyers at Grannis & Hauge, P.A.:
- In May 2018, Michael Dwyer and Conor Tobin won a $3 million verdict from a Dakota County jury for a wrongful death claim. They needed to overcome the state patrol's accident reconstruction testimony that the accident was the sole fault of our clients' 67-year-old husband and father. To do so, they used black box data, surveillance video and the other driver's at-scene recorded statement to persuade the jury that the state trooper was just plain wrong. The jury flipped the state patrol findings and concluded that the other driver was 70 percent at fault for not slowing down as our driver made a left-hand turn in front of her.
- A slow speed rear-end accident which caused complex regional pain syndrome (also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome) led to a $160,000 settlement for a single mother of three.
- Our attorneys obtained a $200,000 settlement for a 71-year-old man who was stopped at a red light when a teenage driver ran a red light, was struck by another car, and slammed into the client's car, pinning him against the steering wheel. The client suffered a closed head injury, smashed testicle which was surgically removed, and accelerated his need for a knee replacement. He struggled with concussion-like symptoms for two years and had to give up driving.
- A 24-year-old woman suffered catastrophic injuries when a panel truck drove through a red light and hit her car on the driver's side. A settlement with a present value in excess of $5.75 million enabled her parents to remodel their home and add a handicapped-accessible apartment, move her out of a long-term facility and into the apartment, and employ round-the-clock health care providers.
- A pedestrian suffered severe leg injuries when she was knocked down and dragged under a passenger van driven by a government employee. The government agency defended the claim on the grounds that our client was not in the crosswalk when the impact took place. The case settled for more than $400,000 in mediation.
- A baby developed cerebral palsy as a result of oxygen deprivation when a C-section was too long delayed. The settlement received will pay damages over the life of the child to provide for a handicapped-accessible home, van, full medical coverage, and a variety of special medical and educational services for the child and her family.
- A young wife and mother died after emergency room personnel failed to diagnose a bacterial infection.
- A 19-year-old man suffered damage to his sciatic nerve, when pain medication was improperly injected during an emergency room visit. A permanent limp resulted. The case was settled by mediation.
- A young woman developed hepatitis C from contaminated gamma globulin, prescribed to combat chronic and severe asthma.
- A 14-year-old lost his eye to a bb gun accident. We investigated and obtained all of the available insurance proceeds. Through negotiation, we were able to limit how much of the settlement had to be paid for medical expenses (subrogation) and reduced it to 7 1/2 percent of the original medical bills.
- A young man's Christmas shopping at the Mall of America was run over twice by a distracted driver. We were able to obtain all of the car insurance possible and convinced our client's private health insurer to waive its claim to be reimbursed for payment of his medical bills.
